Trip Overview

Hemis National park, in Ladakh is best-protected area for Snow Leopard. The mountain environment of bare rocks and snow merges at its best with the whitish color of grey and tinged yellow of Snow Leopard, which is also referred as the Grey Ghost of the Himalayas. Snow Leopards are found at elevations in between 3000 to 4500 M. The extreme temperature makes vegetation thinly scattered over a large area. The trek takes you to the ecstatic Himalayan alpine zones. Snow Leopards are known to take its prey up to 3 times of its own weight. It is more active during dawn, and prefers broken terrain and rocky ravines to catch its prey of marmots, pika, hare, birds and domestic lives stocks. As the sighting is rare, the expertise look the evidences like pug marks, scrapes to track the mysterious cats. This opportunity takes you to trek / hike through some amazing scenery throughout. The highly Endangered Snow Leopards are very less in distribution globally over 12 countries in mountain ranges of Central Asia due to poaching and killing. On a typical sighting day, we hike up to a designated point to set up the sophisticated sighting equipment, which will be carried by our guide. He then keeps his ears tuned for alarm calls by the sheep / goats which are the first to sense the presence of the snow leopard. He will then scan the areas through special binoculars for probable presence of the wild cat. You require a lot of patience to spot a snow leopard as it takes a lot of waiting to sight one. Most of these activities will happen during the first half of the day and lunch will be served on the field or back at the camp if the guide suggests so. Post lunch the day is usually spent in short walks or hikes around the area and knowing about the local culture and tradition.
